Which car moves further?

Today in KAM we explored different ways to make toy cars go further. We quickly discovered that using a steep ramp made the car moves faster and further. Then we tried experimenting with different cars to find out which would move faster and further.

As you can see, all our cars were very different! Some had lots of wheels, some only had a few; some were long and some were short; some were heavy and some were light.

Ali, Iffah, Ibby and Zain Sh's car went the furthest!

To test which car could go faster and further we decided to use the same ramp and the same surface to make it fair. We put some tape with our names on it to show where our car went to. Here is a photo of our results.

We talked about which cars went furthest and what they had in common. We decided that from our results we could say that Ali, Iffah, Ibby and Zain Sh’s car went furthest because it had few wheels, was small/short, and light.

How many blocks can your hand hold?

We picked up as many blocks as we could hold in one hand. Then we put the blocks onto a plate and counted how many there were. This is how many blocks we could hold in our hand.

Sometimes we had to do this a couple of times to make sure we were being accurate. Mawi won, as her hand could hold 10 blocks! Have a look at Ibby’s writing and diagram below.

Which holds the most?

We have been exploring volume and capacity this week. In this photo you can see how we made predictions and ordered the containers according to which would host the most water.

Our prediction

Then we tested our predictions by directly comparing the containers. We did this by pouring the water from one container into another. By observing whether the new container was only half-filled, full or overflowing, we could tell which held the most water.

After lots of filling, refilling, overflowing and laughing, we found out that the blue tub actually held the most water! As Iffah explained, even though the tub is short, “it is also fat and big”.

Our wattle artworks

We have been looking at, talking about, feeling and smelling different kinds of wattle in class. We have learnt that wattle is the flower of Australia and that it is an ‘evergreen’ tree, which mean its leaves don’t go brown and fall off once a year in autumn and winter.

Here are some of the paintings we made of a piece of wattle Ms Mackay brought to class last week. We used green paint and paintbrushes to make the long, thin stems, and pom-poms dipped in yellow paint to print the wattle flowers.

We wrote about what the wattle looked, felt and smelled like. Ibby also wrote that ’The wattle is Australia’s flower and it is beautiful’.

Term 3 Flower Artworks

In Visual Art this term, we have been exploring the subject of flowers using different media. Below you can see our crepe paper collage flowers as well as our handprint friendship flowers. Stay tuned for our wattle paintings – and stories -tomorrow!

We chose the crepe paper in colours which we felt reflected the feeling of springtime.

Our Plants Weeks 4-5

Wow, some of our plants are growing pretty tall! The salad plants are growing more “bushy and thick” (Ibby), and we have started to notice lots of different colours and shapes of the leaves. The tomato plants are growing slowly – they are still “quite tiny” (Rachid) and have long, thin leaves. The sunflower plants are “enormous, like in Jack and the Beanstalk!” (Jessie) and are growing and changing every day.

Splat! Sight Words

In KAM we play a game called Splat to help us with sight word recognition. There are two teams: The Green Tree Frogs and The Blue-Tongue Lizards. Each team lines up behind their captain (Kevin or Timi) and take turns to use the green or blue fly-swats to SPLAT the sight word read out. The first of the two team members to splat the correct word gets the point for their team. We are getting really good at it, and Ms Mackay has to keep finding new words to challenge us!

Investigating living things with 4GC

We used our knowledge of caterpillars from the text 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' to help us sequence the caterpillar's lifecycle.

We found sequencing human life changes pretty easy.

Sequencing the chicken lifecycle wasn't too tricky as we've just had some real chickens living right near us!

We could identify this creature as a worm, but we weren't sure how worms grow and change so we guessed.

This term we have been working with KKM, KHS and 4GC to investigate some features of living things. In this lesson we had to look at how some living things grow and change. We talked about the ways in which all these things are the same, and also how they are all different.
